Making Instagram video edits like this one, is one of my hobbies relating to the arts that I enjoy most. Whether it be making them about book characters, T.V. shows, or just using it as a form of expression for something that I'm passionate about such as the Natural Hair Movement. For this specific edit, I included some of my favourite celebrities and influencers who are proud to showcase their hair and the ways they can style it. I think them being influential individuals who are proud of their hair and its value, really has and positive impact on the ways others perceive their own tresses in a more positive way. This itself is an example of the many ways in which art can be used to get various reactions and allow multiple shifts in perspective.

[Original piece by ShyForWhat] Hey! This is a new piece that I made that reflects what society has lead us to believe about afro-textured hair, all of which is not true as our hair is just as beautiful as any other texture. What I'm trying to communicate with this piece is that we should rise above their words, (hence the title) know our worth, embrace our natural curls, and wear our crowns with pride.
- ShyForWhat We have other demanding questions.
How do We increase the rate of acceptance for Only a matter of texture so that We can live our lives without the Conformant Eye We add on: How do We accept the fact that when they degrade our uniquity, the areas for Us to Free our tresses diminish? questions We need to ask ourselves and others in order to free our manes. - ShyforWhat The idea for this piece came to me when I was brainstorming the many ways in which the Natural Hair Movement can have positive impacts on different people. One of the things that stood out to me was how natural hair can be versatile in many ways and that the stereotypes that claim it's unkempt or unprofessional are incorrect as natural hair can be shaped and manipulated into very neat and aesthetic styles. I thought about how these stereotypes have had negative affects on people's own views on their hair and how those of us who embrace our curls can show them how our hair can be beautiful and unique, hence the galaxy theme of the piece, symbolizing the versatility of our hair in addition to the way the two figures can be seen facing each other as if to give one other a sense of empowerment.
-ShyforWhat [My original poem inspired by The Red Wheelbarrow by William Carlos Williams]
so much depends upon the Screen with all the rules you want to be accepted so now you've been Infected Corrupted lies they tell you so now you hide the real you so much depends upon the Screen with all the rules This poem is to reflect the way the media influences us all in ways we may not even realize and although it does not explicitly say this, it can also be related to the inequalities we may experience and how through the media, certain groups may be promoted in a more positive way compared to others. In terms of the Natural Hair Movement, for years the media has promoted straight hair while deeming afro-textured hair as dirty unkempt and unprofessional, and for years people believed this until recently when people decided to make a difference. - ShyforWhat |
